The Philosophy of International Law

All Book Download | The Philosophy of International Law  | International law has recently emerged as the subject-matter of an exciting new field of philosophical investigation. The Philosophy of International Law contains 29 cutting-edge essays by leading philosophers and international lawyers, all published here in English for the first time, that address the central philosophical questions about international law.  The volume's overarching theme is the moral and political values that should guide the assessment and development of international law and institutions. Some of the essays tackle general topics such as the sources and legitimacy of international law, the nature of international legal adjudication, whether international law can or should aspire to be 'democratic', and the significance of state sovereignty. The other contributions address philosophical problems arising in specific domains of international law, such as human rights law, international economic law, international criminal law, international environmental law, and the laws of war. This volume is the most up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of the philosophy of international law in existence. It is also distinguished by its 'dialogical' methodology: there are two essays on each topic, with the second author engaging with the arguments of the first. It is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the nature and value of international law.

Law and Truth in Biblical and Rabbinic Literature

All Book Download | Law and Truth in Biblical and Rabbinic Literature | How can humans ever attain the knowledge required to administer and implement divine law and render perfect justice in this world? Contrary to the belief that religious law is infallible, Chaya T. Halberstam shows that early rabbinic jurisprudence is characterized by fundamental uncertainty. She argues that while the Hebrew Bible created a sense of confidence and transparency before the law, the rabbis complicated the paths to knowledge and undermined the stability of personal status and ownership, and notions of guilt or innocence. Examining the facts of legal judgments through midrashic discussions of the law and evidence, Halberstam discovers that rabbinic understandings of the law were riddled with doubt and challenged the possibility of true justice. This book thoroughly engages law, narrative, and theology to explicate rabbinic legal authority and its limits.

How to Get Exactly What You Want Out of Life and Work

All Book Download | How to Get Exactly What You Want Out of Life and Work | Patrick Snow's "Creating Your Own Destiny" is the most energetic and inspiring book written about fulfilling your dreams and finding true happiness in life. While thousands of self-help and motivational books exist in the marketplace, this book should be at the top of the list for everyone who wants to improve his or her life. I have had the incredible honor to talk to Patrick Snow in person and to hear him speak in public, and I can truly say he is the genuine article, a man whose energy and incredible gift of vision can help you succeed, a man who truly wants each of us to create our own destinies and choose to live the lives we deserve.

"Creating Your Own Destiny" breaks down the achievement of your destiny into four steps: Dream, Plan, Execute, and Soar. Patrick Snow takes the reader through each of these steps, beginning with dreaming or visualizing what the reader wants because "Only those who can see the invisible, can achieve the impossible!" Snow provides numerous exercises and thoughtful questions to help you decide what you want out of life, and he gives extensive details on how to achieve these goals. He reminds us it isn't that people plan to fail but that they fail to plan which causes them to be stuck in jobs they hate while living paycheck to paycheck. To back up his program, Snow provides numerous examples of people who have become successful, and he lists many resources beyond his book, which include his own coaching services, Creating Your Own Destiny University, many other books, websites, and professional services to help you achieve your dreams.

One of the key points Patrick Snow focuses upon is how over fifty percent of Americans are unhappy at work, and how the corporate 9-5 model no longer provides security for workers. He enforces the importance of having multiple streams of income, and he teaches the reader how to create these multiple streams of income by following his passions rather than working a job he hates to make an employer rich. Snow advocates self-employment, emphasizing that the only way a person will truly be rewarded for his talents is to own his own business. His chapter on using the Internet to grow a home-based business is one of the best resources I have ever read for Internet marketing. Snow gives examples of how to execute your plans a little every day, so over time you will succeed. I especially liked his suggestion to plan as if you only had thirty days left to live so you have a sense of urgency to create your destiny. He also emphasizes that happiness is not just about money and that we must also make time to nurture our health, spend time with family, and follow our higher calling.

Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services

All Book Download |  Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services  | Reducing and managing humanity's demand for energy is a fundamental part of the effort to mitigate climate change. In this, the most comprehensive textbook ever written on the subject, L. Danny Harvey lays out the theory and practice of how things must change if we are to meet our energy needs sustainably. The book begins with a succinct summary of the scientific basis for concern over global warming, then outlines energy basics and current patterns and trends in energy use. This is followed by a discussion of current and advanced technologies for the generation of electricity from fossil fuels. The book then considers in detail how energy is used, and how this use can be dramatically reduced, in the following end-use sectors:
- buildings
- transportation
- industry
- food and agriculture
- municipal services

The findings from these sector-by-sector assessments are then applied to generate scenarios of how global energy demand could evolve over the coming decades with full implementation of the identified and economically-feasible energy-saving potential. The books ends with a brief discussion of policies that can be used to reduce energy demand, but also addresses the limits of technologically-based improvements in efficiency in moderating demand and of the need to re-think some of our underlying assumptions concerning what we really need. Along with its companion volume on C-free energy supply, and accompanied by extensive supplementary online material, this is an essential resource for students and practitioners in engineering, architecture, environment and energy related fields.

Geographical Imaginations

All Book Download | Geographical Imaginations   | This work provides a reading of geography as a discipline and a discourse, and attempts to situate that discourse within the fabric of contemporary social theory. Its focus is on understanding the ways in which social life is variously embedded in place, space and landscape. In the fulfillment of this objective, historical imagination, textual exegesis, philosophical scrutiny, sociological interpretation and geographical sensitivity are interwoven. In mapping human geography into contemporary social theory, the author addresses, re-interprets and questions key theoretical debates and issues post-colonialism, structuration theory, feminism, deconstruction, postmodernism and post-structuralism and explores the crucial connection between space, power and knowledge. "Geographical Imaginations" is both a critique of contemporary social theory and a fundamental contribution to the understanding of social life and its intrinsic spatiality.

The Quest for Artificial Intelligence

All Book Download | The Quest for Artificial Intelligence | Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field within computer science that is attempting to build enhanced intelligence into computer systems. This book traces the history of the subject, from the early dreams of eighteenth-century (and earlier) pioneers to the more successful work of today's AI engineers. AI is becoming more and more a part of everyone's life. The technology is already embedded in face-recognizing cameras, speech-recognition software, Internet search engines, and health-care robots, among other applications. The book's many diagrams and easy-to-understand descriptions of AI programs will help the casual reader gain an understanding of how these and other AI systems actually work. Its thorough (but unobtrusive) end-of-chapter notes containing citations to important source materials will be of great use to AI scholars and researchers. This book promises to be the definitive history of a field that has captivated the imaginations of scie Nils J. Nilsson's book begins with the story of how artificial intelligence originated in 1956 at a Dartmouth summer project that had the goal of "making a machine behave in ways that would be called intelligent if a human were so behaving." It relates how in the fifty-plus years that followed, AI has been the subject of overly-optimistic predictions, academic arguments that its goals are unachievable, funding excesses, and funding droughts. But the underlying reality is that AI has contributed key components to the technology foundations that shaped the modern world, and indeed has transformed our view of machines and of our relation to them.

The algorithms that compute your driving directions, and also compute the paths of characters in video games? They rely on results from AI research on mobile, intelligent robots. Those surprisingly high-quality voice response systems we encounter when we phone a customer-service number? They use results from AI research in speech recognition. The recommender systems ("You might also like") used by many web vendors? They use machine learning methods whose history is described by Nilsson. And AI technology is embedded in a host of less-apparent applications ranging from medical devices to automated securities trading systems. ntists, philosophers, and writers for centuries.

Computational Methods in Biometric Authentication: Statistical Methods for Performance Evaluation

All Book Download | Computational Methods in Biometric Authentication: Statistical Methods for Performance Evaluation | Biometrics, the science of using physical traits to identify individuals, is playing an increasing role in our security-conscious society and across the globe. Biometric authentication, or bioauthentication, systems are being used to secure everything from amusement parks to bank accounts to military installations. Yet developments in this field have not been matched by an equivalent improvement in the statistical methods for evaluating these systems. Compensating for this need, this unique text/reference provides a basic statistical methodology for practitioners and testers of bioauthentication devices, supplying a set of rigorous statistical methods for evaluating biometric authentication systems. This framework of methods can be extended and generalized for a wide range of applications and tests. This is the first single resource on statistical methods for estimation and comparison of the performance of biometric authentication systems. The book focuses on six common performance metrics: for each metric, statistical methods are derived for a single system that incorporates confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, sample size calculations, power calculations and prediction intervals. These methods are also extended to allow for the statistical comparison and evaluation of multiple systems for both independent and paired data. Topics and features: * Provides a statistical methodology for the most common biometric performance metrics: failure to enroll (FTE), failure to acquire (FTA), false non-match rate (FNMR), false match rate (FMR), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves * Presents methods for the comparison of two or more biometric performance metrics * Introduces a new bootstrap methodology for FMR and ROC curve estimation * Supplies more than 120 examples, using publicly available biometric data where possible * Discusses the addition of prediction intervals to the bioauthentication statistical toolset * Describes sample-size and power calculations for FTE, FTA, FNMR and FMR Researchers, managers and decisions makers needing to compare biometric systems across a variety of metrics will find within this reference an invaluable set of statistical tools. Written for an upper-level undergraduate or master’s level audience with a quantitative background, readers are also expected to have an understanding of the topics in a typical undergraduate statistics course. Dr. Michael E. Schuckers is Associate Professor of Statistics at St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY, and a member of the Center for Identification Technology Research.

Introduction to Process Algebra

All Book Download | Introduction to Process Algebra   |
\Automated and semi-automated manipulation of so called labelled transition systems has become an important means in discovering flaws in software and hardware systems. Process algebra has been developed to express such labelled transition systems algebraically, which enhances the ways of manipulation by means of equational logic and term rewriting. The theory of process algebra has developed rapidly over the last twenty years, and verification tools have been developed on the basis of process algebra, often in cooperation with techniques related to model checking. This textbook gives a thorough introduction into the basics of process algebra and its applications.

The book is set up as follows. Chapter 2 introduces basic process algebra, which can express finite process graphs; an equational logic is presented that is sound and complete modulo bisimulation equivalence. Chapter 3 features merge operators to express processes that are executed in parallel. Chapter 4 defines recursion to describe infinite process behaviour. Chapter 5 explains how to abstract away from internal computations. Chapter 6 applies the framework from the previous chapters to verify the correctness of two network protocols. Furthermore, it gives an overview of existing techniques and automated tools to support such verification efforts. Chapter 7 gives examples of further operators that can be added to the framework. Appendices A and B provide background material for the theory developed in the earlier chapters. Appendix A presents the basics of equational logic, while Appendix B gives an overview of structural operational semantics.

An International Analysis of the Role of the Political Adviser

All Book Download | An International Analysis of the Role of the Political Adviser  | This comparative collection of original contributions examines the role of political staff in executive government and the consequences for policy-making and governance. The leading contributors reveal that good governance is about governments getting the advice that they need to hear as well as the advice that they want to hear. They highlight the importance of ensuring that the advice is appropriately responsive to the policy priorities of the government of the day. In countries such as the United States, and in some European democracies, political appointments to senior administrative positions are not a new development. However, in recent years a third element the political adviser has also become a feature of policy-making and political management in Westminster-styled systems.

This authoritative work seeks to illuminate the drivers behind the advent of political staff in executive government, and the consequences for policy-making and governance. This unique book includes case studies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Academics and postgraduates researching in public administration and management as well as political science will find this book invaluable. Policymakers in agencies responsible for public service leadership will also find much to interest them in this important book.

Printed in full color, it is destined to replace its predecessor, the classic but long-outdated Handbook of Mathematical Functions, edited by Abramowitz and Stegun. Included with every copy of the book is a CD with a searchable PDF of each chapter.

Technology, Policy, and the Integrity of Social Life

All Book Download | Technology, Policy, and the Integrity of Social Life  | Privacy is one of the most urgent issues associated with information technology and digital media. This book claims that what people really care about when they complain and protest that privacy has been violated is not the act of sharing information itself most people understand that this is crucial to social life but the inappropriate, improper sharing of information.

Arguing that privacy concerns should not be limited solely to concern about control over personal information, Helen Nissenbaum counters that information ought to be distributed and protected according to norms governing distinct social contexts—whether it be workplace, health care, schools, or among family and friends. She warns that basic distinctions between public and private, informing many current privacy policies, in fact obscure more than they clarify. In truth, contemporary information systems should alarm us only when they function without regard for social norms and values, and thereby weaken the fabric of social life.

Contemporary Political Sociology: Globalization, Politics and Power

All Book Download | Contemporary Political Sociology: Globalization, Politics and Power  | The second edition of this popular book is a fully revised and updated introduction to developments in contemporary political sociology, and especially to the burgeoning literature on globalization.  The discussion throughout concerns how, in order to understand contemporary politics, we need to be sensitive to the contestation of cultural meanings, and to their effects on social structuring and democratizing social action.  The book focuses throughout on substantive areas of sociological research.  There are updated chapters on: definitions of power and politics; macro–theories of globalization, including new discussions of global governance and state transformation, and of media and political community; social movements, including recent work on global social movements; and citizenship and the politics of equality and “difference”, including an extended discussion of welfare and poverty.

In addition there is a new chapter on democracy, democratization, and environmentalism in a global context. Above all the book lays out the terms of the fundamental debate that is currently being enacted in contemporary politics, giving students in sociology and politics the tools to understand and to assess for themselves how globalization is linked to imperialism, at the same as it involves new possibilities for democracy, peace and respect for human rights.

Dynamic Noncooperative Game Theory

All Book Download| Dynamic Noncooperative Game Theory  | Recent interest in biological games and mathematical finance make this classic 1982 text a necessity once again. Unlike other books in the field, this text provides an overview of the analysis of dynamic/differential zero-sum and nonzero-sum games and simultaneously stresses the role of different information patterns. The first edition was fully revised in 1995, adding new topics such as randomized strategies, finite games with integrated decisions, and refinements of Nash equilibrium. Readers can now look forward to even more recent results in this unabridged, revised SIAM Classics edition. Topics covered include static and dynamic noncooperative game theory, with an emphasis on the interplay between dynamic information patterns and structural properties of several different types of equilibria; Nash and Stackelberg solution concepts; multi-act games; Braess paradox; differential games; the relationship between the existence of solutions of Riccati equations and the existence of Nash equilibrium solutions; and infinite-horizon differential games.

Introduction to Matrix Analysis (Classics in Applied Mathematics)

All Book Download| Introduction to Matrix Analysis (Classics in Applied Mathematics)| Long considered to be  a classic in its field, this was the first book in English to include three basic fields of the analysis of matrices symmetric matrices and quadratic forms, matrices and differential equations, and positive matrices and their use in probability theory and mathematical economics. Written in lucid, concise terms, this volume covers all the key aspects of matrix analysis and presents a variety of fundamental methods. Originally published in 1970, this book replaces the first edition previously published by SIAM in the Classics series. Here you will find a basic guide to operations with matrices and the theory of symmetric matrices, plus an understanding of general square matrices, origins of Markov matrices and non-negative matrices in general, minimum- maximum characterization of characteristic roots, Krnoecker products, functions of matrices, and much more. These ideas and methods will serve as powerful analytical tools.

Probability (Classics in Applied Mathematics )

All Book Download| Probability (Classics in Applied Mathematics ) | Well known for the clear, inductive nature of its exposition, this reprint volume is an excellent introduction to mathematical probability theory. It may be used as a graduate-level text in one- or two-semester courses in probability for students who are familiar with basic measure theory, or as a supplement in courses in stochastic processes or mathematical statistics. Designed around the needs of the student, this book achieves readability and clarity by giving the most important results in each area while not dwelling on any one subject. Each new idea or concept is introduced from an intuitive, common-sense point of view. Students are helped to understand why things work, instead of being given a dry theorem-proof regime.

Prima Official Game Guide

All Book Download| Prima Official Game Guide | This guide will get you through the whole story, but there are quite a few mistakes that will definitely hinder you if you're trying to get every little thing the game offers. One example is the locations of the Templars on the Kingdom map vs the given screenshot examples. The screenshots are listed 1-30, but on the map, the numbers 31 and 32 appear while 23 and 24 don't exist. With this mistake in place it causes a major mismatch with the numbers to the screenshots. It took me a long time to figure out what was happening and even longer to correct the mistakes. Guides are supposed to help you on your missions and quests and this one didn't do a very good job. Instead of having fun, I became quite frustrated only because the guide was not carefully put together.

The book is quite good in helping you to finish the main storyline part of the game. At first i rushed in and fought everyone with the longsword, but after reading the stategies on the pages i was able to quick strike the main targets and then escape unseen and unharmed like a true assassin. What really got me angry was that there are a bunch of misprints on the maps, and the some of the descriptions of where to find the flag markers and the templars are completely wrong. For example there are 30 templars to assassinate in the kingdom level. The book states this in italic green print, but when you look at the map on the page (and the pull out map poster) there are 30 dots that somehow get labeled up to 32, and there's a bunch of more misprints too. If i had known about the mistakes in the book i would never have purchased it. Shoddy proofreading =2 stars. My advice to others (if you care) is don't buy this book. Look for one by another company or look online for hints. I was amazed because prima usually does a good job with their guides.

Optimal Control, Statistics , and Path Planning

All Book Download|  Optimal Control, Statistics , and Path Planning   | Splines, both interpolatory and smoothing, have a long and rich history that has largely been application driven. This book unifies these constructions in a comprehensive and accessible way, drawing from the latest methods and applications to show how they arise naturally in the theory of linear control systems. Magnus Egerstedt and Clyde Martin are leading innovators in the use of control theoretic splines to bring together many diverse applications within a common framework. In this book, they begin with a series of problems ranging from path planning to statistics to approximation. Using the tools of optimization over vector spaces, Egerstedt and Martin demonstrate how all of these problems are part of the same general mathematical framework, and how they are all, to a certain degree, a consequence of the optimization problem of finding the shortest distance from a point to an affine subspace in a Hilbert space. They cover periodic splines, monotone splines, and splines with inequality constraints, and explain how any finite number of linear constraints can be added. This book reveals how the many natural connections between control theory, numerical analysis, and statistics can be used to generate powerful mathematical and analytical tools. This book is an excellent resource for students and professionals in control theory, robotics, engineering, computer graphics, econometrics, and any area that requires the construction of curves based on sets of raw data

Recognising Non-Formal and Informal Learning

All Book Download| Recognising Non-Formal and Informal Learning| Although learning often takes place within formal settings and designated environments, a great deal of valuable learning also occurs either deliberately or informally in everyday life. Policy makers in OECD countries have become increasingly aware that non-formal and informal learning represents a rich source of human capital. Policies which recognise this can play a significant role in a coherent lifelong learning framework, and present practices can be improved to make the knowledge and competencies people acquire outside of formal schooling more visible. The challenge for policy makers is to develop processes for recognising such learning, processes that will generate net benefits both to individuals and to society at large. This report, based on an OECD review in 22 countries, explores the advantages of recognising non-formal and informal learning outcomes, takes stock of existing policies and practices, and recommends how to organise recognition of these learning systems.

Cutting Costs in Chemicals Management. How OECD Helps Governments and Industry

All Book Download| Cutting Costs in Chemicals Management. How OECD Helps Governments and Industry  |The chemicals industry - including industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, food and feed additives and cosmetics - is one of the world’s largest industrial sectors. Many chemical products are traded internationally. Varying national requirements can mean duplication of efforts and significant costs for the chemicals industry, as well as posing barriers to trade. By agreeing on test methods and data quality and sharing the workload of chemical safety testing and assessments, countries together achieve environmentally sustainable and cost-effective results.

For non-clinical health and safety testing, for example, the results of such studies carried out on a chemical product in one OECD country must be accepted by the others as long as it was carried out in accordance with the OECD Test Guidelines and Principles of Good Laboratory Practice. This saves the chemicals industry the expense of duplicative testing for products that are marketed in more than one country. This report analyses the rigorous and comprehensive system for assessing and managing chemicals that helps governments and industry save about EUR 150 million each year, through "work sharing" facilitated by the OECD.

Networking For Dummies, 9th Edition

All Book Download| Networking For Dummies, 9th Edition   | Fully updated and revised to include the latest trends in networking, this perennial bestseller features updated coverage of broadband technologies, storage, and backup. You'll discover the hottest topics for setting up a network at home or in the office. Popular For Dummies author Doug Lowe knows what the networking beginner is looking for, so to that end, he offers you networking fundamentals written in his easy-to-understand style and discusses topics such as Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. Computers in business environments become exponentially helpful and critical for daily operations when they're linked together in local area networks (LANs) that enable coworkers to share files, Internet access, and valuable resources like printers and plotters. Building a network of IBM-compatible PCs requires careful strategic planning, and Networking for Dummies, Fourth Edition, will help you sort out the technical details as painlessly as possible. This book helps you figure out whether you need a LAN at all--the author isn't shy about recommending simpler solutions such as printer switches--and then helps you get everything hooked up. Mainly, Lowe describes LANs in an accurate and comprehensive, though somewhat generic, way.

Once it has been determined that you need a network operating system, Lowe describes the characteristics of several good ones (including NetWare 4.2, NetWare 5, Windows NT 4, and LANtastic). He also explains network architectures, cabling systems, and security issues. New to this edition is information on transforming your LAN into an intranet by adapting internal protocols to Internet standards. There's lots of solid information on troubleshooting and optimizing performance too. Much of the valuable information in Networking for Dummies comes in the form of scenarios. Lowe uses short situations and explains, specifically, what networking hardware and software will be required or beneficial. Find a story that matches your situation and you'll be in business.

The Role of Information and Communication Technologies

All Book Download |  The Role of Information and Communication Technologies|  Despite the promise they hold out, implementing information and communication technologies (ICTs) in clinical care has proven to be a very difficult undertaking. More than a decade of efforts provide a picture of significant public investments, resulting in both notable successes and some highly publicised costly delays and failures. This has been accompanied by a failure to achieve widespread understanding among the general public and the medical profession of the benefits of electronic record keeping and information exchange.

With consistent cross-country information on these issues largely absent, the OECD has used lessons learned from case studies in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United States to identify the opportunities offered by ICTs and to analyse under what conditions these technologies are most likely to result in efficiency and quality-of-care improvements. The findings highlight a number of practices or approaches that could usefully be employed in efforts to improve and accelerate the adoption and use of these technologies.
